Having spent the past two summers abroad interning at universities, three things were important for me this summer:
(1) Getting to know how it feels to spend your hard-earned (not really) money in India,
(2) Doing an industrial internship, and
(3) Spending the summer in Bangalore, supposedly one of the best cities to spend one’s summer in India.
We had received en email on the CSE group from the yahoo HR team offering us internships, and asked us to email our resumes to them. A telephonic interview was conducted for the shortlisted candidates, comprising usual questions on algorithms and the field in which we would like to work depending on our past research projects. Also, I did not want to face the prospect of rejection after an interview with Google.
All these factors together made Yahoo! Labs @ Bangalore seem like the ideal place for me to be. However, things did not turn out well for me!
I wanted to participate in some serious research project and probably get myself a publication out of it at the very least. Unfortunately, my guide (under whom I was supposed to work) was always busy doing his own work. He never really seemed to care about the amount of effort I was eager to put into the project. I would go up to him and ask him for work but he would always set me some trivial task and send me on my way. After a few weeks I stopped pushing him too.
I would go to work around noon, have lunch, snacks (all of which was free) and return by 6 in the evening.
Therefore, for people who want to maaro peace and enjoy, I would suggest Yahoo! as the ideal place to go. For my part, I was disappointed with the internship, but happy about being paid 30k per month for doing nothing.
